Creating a good online presence

Creating a good online presence: what is the best approach?

This post will focus on creative industries so an example in this scenario would be the goal of creating an online portfolio of your art for potential employers. To begin to establish an online presence you should first decide the goal of your social identity and what you want to present, what is your aim? Perhaps you are wanting to build a network of professionals in your industry to take inspiration and learn from or maybe you want to build a website for yourself to organise a collection of portfolios to send to potential employers so you can be more efficient at applications as well as giving access to a display of a range of skills not just specific to one job for the potential of being recommended for other placements.

Once you have a clear intention it is good to organise collections of work separated by their appeal and intention, for example grouping storyboards you can then link to as an example to employers.

Some platforms to consider using would be LinkedIn, website creators such as Wix and blog site such as Blogger. These all give you a public platform where you can organise your content and build or link portfolios.

  • LinkedIn is an amazing site for networking and job searching. In terms of networking LinkedIn connects you with professionals worldwide and the built-in messaging function allows you to form and maintain connections gaining insights and advice from people in industries you aspire to be in or are trying to grown within. For job searching LinkedIn allows you to create an organised profile containing all your professional achievements and displays of your skills. This can be viewed by potential employers and companies looking to expand their team or seeking workers for a more specific project. Similarly, you can also view and follow companies, and industry leads to give you insight to the market within the industry. • Wix is a website builder with different payment plan options with varying benefits including a free option with the drawback of having Wix branding present on your site. Wix is a great tool for beginners with no coding experience as it focuses on a user-friendly design making it easy to use and valuble when wanting to create your own digital portfolio with details about yourself and your work and collections of work in whatever configuration fits your needs. • Personally, I use blogger as this is a free site with a very easy to use interface allowing you to present your insights and opinions to find likeminded people and help other beginners within the industry. It also provides analytics through google so you can gauge your reach and effectiveness. This makes it a great tool for people wanting to begin an online presence without a big investment. The steps you should take to promote your work online in my opinion are to first find a platform to begin to integrate yourself within the community of your industry/goal industry. LinkedIn is good for this providing a user-friendly interface and links to access community discussions and spaces specific to your goals and industry.

This will give you a better perspective of what employers look for and how others build an effective online presence. As well as the insight of area leaders to offer new perspectives you may not have considered. Next, decide which platforms support your aims and best suit your goal, have you seen any recommendations you would consider exploring? Then I would organise what I aim to present for example a portfolio showcasing storyboarding and begin posting or building a website. Importantly, I would also reach out within community and gather opinions and seek constructive criticism to learn and grow.

What sets you apart from the competition would be a clear easy to understand presentation of your work and adaptation to new ideas and changes proposed by employers. Realistically, employers have many applications and portfolios to go through so you need to be concise with your work and explanations ensuring you only focus on what is important as the first impression really counts. Additionally, in the same vein I would update and promote your work after every new adaptation from advice and learning.

One good way of promoting your work would be to use LinkedIn’s ad platform to reach professionals in your industry which would provide the opportunity for feedback on the reception of your work and can be used with every update to your portfolio to continue exposing yourself to potential employers. This will in turn expand your network which is a very valuable tool as you can reach out and gain insight into how area leads created their own platform and online presence as they have been successful. #
