The importance of networking within creative industries

The importance of networking within the creative industries

What is networking? The definition of networking is ‘the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts’ so what does this mean. Networking is the process of communicating and establishing connections with others in your area of interest or chosen field. Often this involves a professional scene as basic principles of fair exposure and moral and ethical guidelines based around respect and integrity must be followed when learning and taking from the work of others. This is important as it fosters healthy exchange and growth as people feel safe to share their ideas, perspectives and advice which is beneficial to expand and advance the chosen field.

So why is this important in the creative industries? Networking is important within the creative industries as they are collaborative in nature therefore relies heavily on the influence of others in how we learn and grow as well as the opportunities and insight we gain. Networking opens doors such as to employment opportunities as through your connections with people within the industry and the presentation of your work you are recommended.

Beginning networking you should start with research into your discipline area and the people within your chosen field consider who you look up to and their journey. You should aim to connect, enquire and gain insight from these people. One way to do this is by attending community events such as talks within your chosen area as you can learn from the panels and connect with others who are new to the community and seek their recommendation of guidance and what they have learned. Community events and talk are not just in person either there are many held online expanding the reach you could have within the community to build strong lasting relationships with the benefit of support and future collaboration. Here is a link to view some current events regarding animation as an example Discover Animation Events & Activities Online | Eventbrite Eventbrite is a useful tool as it offers filtering of searches to your preferred location time and type of event.

How should you conduct yourself? Whether networking at online or in person, you should always be present, this is by actively listening and engaging in conversations as this is how you will learn and find likeminded people to connect with. It is also important to display your interest by asking for their details to connect with them outside of the event and to follow up on this to further this display. When meeting people you should always adhere to moral and ethical guidelines auch as treating everyone with respect and understanding. Some information on professionalism and moral and ethical behaviour can be found at my other blog post here https://robynneb-art.blogspot.com/2025/11/professionalism-in-creative-industries.html

So what platforms are available for networking within the creative industries? My personal preference is LinkedIn as it contains an in-built messaging system and allows you to join groups or follow companies as well as view the professional achievements of others and who they relate to. This is a great tool as it is open to anyone worldwide, so you have access to a broader range of people and in turn perspectives. Additionally, as a large well known platform LinkedIn is a great tool to use when meeting people at in person events as you can friend them and follow up with conversation outside of that specific event. I have also found this post online which looks at the best UK networking groups for creatives which can be viewed through this link The Best UK Networking Groups for Creatives | Bristol Creative Industries Additionally, LinkedIn has job search functionalities which is a great way to connect with potential employers. Also, you can promote yourself professionally either through LinkedIn and their online advertising services, posting on social media or handing out business cards at events this is a great way to get your name out there for people to reach out for or with advice, feedback or simply to connect and potentially collaborate.

My advice when networking would be to put yourself out there whether that be through creating your own online platform which I have some advice on here https://robynneb-art.blogspot.com/2025/11/networking-in-creative-industies.html  or by attending in person events. For you to build connections through networking you need to take the first steps and get out there so people can find you, you will find that once you begin this process it becomes much easier as associates can connect you with new and similar communities and events (where you can meet more people) or even specific people who are professionals in your area of interest. As always when forming connections with new people and integrating into new groups, you should be aware of your behaviours morally and ethically ensuring you treat everyone with respect and actively listen to advice and support given. The support of others should be greatly appreciated as networking is a great tool for you to learn and grow.
