Is freelancing the road to success?
Working in the creative industries: is freelancing the road to success?
What does it mean to be a freelancer? A freelancer is someone who works for themselves, building their own clientele and managing their own personal business earning money per project. They work based on projects for a range of clientele with no fixed employer.
Due to the nature of this line of work and the fact you determine your success and perception to others, there are some good general skills to have regardless of discipline.
To begin with, communication is key as this is the basis of connections formed with clients, this can be seen as communication of your services through advertising and promotion or the more in-depth communication with clientele on the expectations of an outcome for example. Effective communication is very important as your behaviours reflect your attitude and the level of trust the client can place with you, so it is important to maintain a professional attitude. For more detail on the importance of professionalism see my other post here https://robynneb-art.blogspot.com/2025/11/professionalism-in-creative-industries.html Communication and its effect on the perception of your service also links to marketing as if clientele have a good experience, they are more likely to return or spread the word which is free advertisement or you could make use of testimonials to reflect the reliability of your work. It is important though, to not rely solely on this as you first need to draw in clients to begin to build a network of people who would be your ideal clientele. Some good ways to market yourself would be to attend industry events to connect with others in your or a similar industry to gain insight into what they have learned and how they have succeeded and to begin to build an online presence to clearly display your work and or testimonials so clients are fully informed and have easy access to information about your business and work. For more detail on networking the benefits and my advice on platforms and how to see my other post here https://robynneb-art.blogspot.com/2025/11/networking-in-creative-industies.html
Due to working independently, freelancers typically work without much guidance therefore it is important that a freelancer has in depth industry knowledge to ensure the correct decisions are made and that clients can be fully informed with any queries resolved. One way to build this skill would be to connect with industry leads and experts in your field to gain their advice and knowledge brought through their own experience, this is again why networking is so vital.
In a similar vein to the understanding of the process, freelancers need to have highly attuned project management skills. This is because freelancers must juggle clients on their own balancing different schedules to meet deadlines and ensure that clients recieve the desired outcome and are happy with the service provided as this in turn generates positive reviews and feedback which can be used to grow and market your service building success.
So, what are the pros and cons of becoming a freelancer?
The pros of being a freelancer would be the amount of flexability you have in your work life. An example of this would be that you would determine your own hours and income this gives you the freedom to determine your work-life balance. Additionally, you have the freedom to deside your focus and within the creative industries having an opportunity for undirected creativity within your work is valuable as you have the chance to focus on your specific passions creating a greater sense of achievement and job satisfaction. Another pro would be the income opportunities that are available as you are limited by your own actions and marketing more detailed knowledge on the income potential can be found here How Much Can You Really Earn Freelancing? (Facts & Stats) - Freelance Ready
Alternatively, the need to be self-sufficient can create a large amount of pressure if not well enough equipped to deal with the challenges of multiple project management, this can be managed by limiting your workload and having built the skills required for scheduling and balance. Linking to this, financial gain can be inconsistent as the market your work falls within grows and changes such as a drop in general demand or peak seasons.
An example within the creative industries would be that of game development studios and working in a large studio versus indie game development. When working in indie game development, you would have more freedom of creativity and the opportunity to take risks that larger companies would not allowing for the creation of fresh ideas and innovation in the world of games. However, funding is typically significantly less abundant potentially limiting the outcome and a lack of financial stability. Whereas, in AAA studios for game development, you are more limited with creative expression due to being managed and working as part of a larger team so your overall influence on the outcome is lessened but, you would have more financial stability and consistency. Which would you be more inclined to join and enjoy?
My general advice when considering freelancing would be to carefully consider the pros and cons of each and establish an idea of what would best suit your goals as well as to consider your current skill set. Bear in mind though that skills are learned so even if you do not have the skills needed yet it is a good idea to consider which you would need to develop and why to reach your goal.
